Dichroic Mosaic on Green Music Note Sculpture

A mosaic of various dichroic glass are carefully put together on a background of black glass.  The first step was to make a temporary mold of a music note,  then to fill the bottom with black glass, then arrange the cut up pieces of various dichroic glass through out the music note shape in the mold and then put clear glass on top of the dichroic glass.  The glass is then fired to cast into the mold.  After that firing, I ground smooth all the edges and then it was fire polished in the kiln.  The music note is epoxied to a stand that was made by cutting three pieces for varying sizes and tack fusing them into the stand.

5.375" tall x 2.5" wide x 1.675" deep

Making music notes was inspired while I was playing the piano.  I was learning a new piece that was complex for me.  The music notes were staring back at me.  All of a sudden, I started thinking about the concept of a music note sculpture.  I immediately went to my studio to test out the idea and continue to refine the design as well as creating various color patterns.

  • Dichroic glass - Thin layers of metallic oxides, such as titanium, silicon, and magnesium are deposited upon the surface of the glass in a high temperature, vacuum furnace. This creates a brilliant coating on the glass that displays more than one color, especially when viewed from different angles.
