Dichroic Purple, Yellow and White Music Note Sculpture

Combining the colors of purple, yellow and white was inspired while I was making a commission of a sculpture with the colors of Avila University.  The first step was to make a temporary mold of a music note,  then to create the swirls of each color into a glass/design. that glass was then cut and designed into a pattern in the shape of a music note with sparkles of dichroic glass added.  The glass is then fired to cast into the mold.  After that firing, I grinded smooth all the edges and then it was fire polished in the kiln.  The music note is epoxied to a stand that was made by cutting three pieces for varying sizes and tack fusing them into the stand. 

Making music notes was inspired while I was playing the piano.  I was learning a new piece that was complex for me.  The music notes were staring back at me.  All of a sudden, I started thinking about the concept of a music note sculpture.  I immediately went to my studio to test out the idea and continue to refine the design as well as creating various color patterns.

• Dichroic glass - Thin layers of metallic oxides, such as titanium, silicon, and magnesium are deposited upon the surface of the glass in a high temperature, vacuum furnace. This creates a brilliant coating on the glass that displays more than one color, especially when viewed from different angles.
